Volker Finke has been officially appointed as the new coach of the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon. The announcement was made during the CRTV news on Wednesday at 8:30 p.m. As reported earlier by Africa Top Sports, the German coach was chosen after negotiations, with Raymond Domenech and Antoine Kombouaré being among the other candidates considered.
This will be Finke’s first time coaching a national team, and he will initially act on the sidelines for a smooth transition. His full coaching responsibilities will begin after the 4th and 5th days of the World Cup qualifiers against Togo and DR Congo in June 2014. Finke’s contract extends until 2014 with an option for an additional four years.
The choice of Finke was reportedly influenced by a partnership with Puma, the equipment supplier to the Lions and the Cameroon Football Federation (Fécafoot). The announcement of his appointment was accelerated due to the illness of Jean-Paul Akono, the former coach. However, it’s noted that Finke’s appointment is not seen as a cure-all for Akono’s recovery.
