CAMEROON: VOLKER FINKE LIKELY TO STAY ON AS COACH DESPITE DOUBTS
Despite persistent rumors suggesting he could be replaced by Thomas Nkono, Volker Finke may well continue as head coach of the Indomitable Lions. Although his current contract with Cameroon ends in June, several strong backers—both corporate and political—appear to be tipping the scales in his favor.
According to Camfoot.com, the German tactician enjoys the backing of Puma, Cameroon’s official kit supplier, but more importantly, he has the support of President Paul Biya and other senior government figures. One anonymous source even declared:
“Unless there is a last-minute change, he will be kept in his position for another two years.”
However, this possible extension would reportedly come with significant conditions. After a disappointing 2015 AFCON, the long-term goal set for Finke is still in place: build a team capable of winning the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, which Cameroon will host.
“This means that the failure of 2015 would not actually count,” added the source.
While internal discussions within the Normalization Committee hinted at a change in leadership, particularly in favor of Thomas Nkono, it seems Finke’s future is now tied to a long-term vision—not short-term results.
If reappointed, the German coach will need to deliver progress while working under stricter oversight. For now, all signs point to continuity over change at the helm of Cameroon’s national team.
