Nicolas Nkoulou Reflects on Cameroon’s World Cup Disappointment
Cameroon defender Nicolas Nkoulou has spoken candidly about the Indomitable Lions’ disappointing showing at the last FIFA World Cup. Despite losing all three group matches, the Olympique de Marseille player believes the team possessed the quality to perform better.
In a press conference held Thursday at the Louis-Dreyfus Center, Nkoulou expressed confidence that Cameroon’s struggles were not due to a lack of talent but rather a failure to translate it onto the pitch. “Across the team, I’m convinced we had a winning streak,” he said. “It’s a shame, we got through it. But it’s not enough to have names, you have to prove it.”
Asked whether his comments were aimed at any particular players, Nkoulou was clear that his critique included himself. “Not at all. I’m one of those who didn’t deliver. I’m disappointed, but life goes on.”
The defender, who previously played for AS Monaco, remains hopeful that Cameroon can rebuild and achieve better results in future international tournaments.
