Former Cameroonian international Modeste Mbami has declined the role of Team Manager for Cameroon’s local national team, despite being officially appointed by the Cameroonian Football Federation on November 15.

The former Indomitable Lions midfielder, who enjoyed a successful career both in Europe and with the national team, was expected to bring his experience and leadership to the squad. His appointment was seen as part of the federation’s efforts to strengthen the structure around the local team and benefit from the expertise of former internationals.

However, Mbami does not appear convinced by the proposal. In an official press release, he made it clear that he would not accept the position.

In his statement, Mbami explained that his refusal was motivated by several factors. Although he expressed gratitude for the confidence shown in him by the federation, he suggested that the conditions surrounding the role were not suitable. The former midfielder indicated that there were organizational and structural concerns that made it difficult for him to fully commit to the responsibilities expected of a Team Manager.

He also emphasized the importance of clarity regarding duties, working conditions, and the overall project linked to the local national team. According to him, accepting such a position requires a well-defined framework to ensure that the staff can work efficiently and contribute meaningfully to the development of the squad.

Mbami’s decision highlights ongoing challenges within Cameroonian football administration, where disagreements over management and organization have often surfaced. His refusal may raise questions about the federation’s internal planning and communication, particularly when it comes to integrating former players into technical or managerial roles.

A respected figure in Cameroonian football, Mbami represented the Indomitable Lions for several years and notably won two Africa Cup of Nations titles. He also built a solid club career in France and Spain, playing for teams such as Paris Saint-Germain, Olympique de Marseille, and Almería. His experience had been viewed as a valuable asset for mentoring younger, locally based players.

For now, the federation will likely need to reconsider its plans and search for another candidate to fill the Team Manager position. Meanwhile, Mbami’s stance underlines his desire to work only under conditions that align with his professional expectations and vision for the team’s development.
