Joel Matip, absent from the Cameroonian national team since the 2014 World Cup, has once again ruled out a return to the Indomitable Lions, at least for the time being.

The Liverpool defender, recently named Man of the Match in the UEFA Champions League final against Tottenham, has declined Clarence Seedorf’s call-up for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations. According to sources, this marks the third time Matip has refused an invitation from the Cameroon coach, who even traveled to England in an attempt to persuade the player in person. Despite these efforts, Matip remained firm in his decision to stay away from international duty.

Born in Bochum, Germany, Matip has 27 caps for Cameroon. His choice continues to be a point of discussion for the national team, which had hoped to rely on his defensive experience in Egypt for the upcoming AFCON tournament.

Matip’s absence leaves Cameroon seeking alternatives in defense as the Indomitable Lions prepare for the continental competition, underlining the ongoing challenges of assembling the squad with Europe-based stars.
