Cameroon goalkeeper Andre Onana eyes return to the summit as Man United’s number one
Andre Onana has not abandoned hope of reclaiming the gloves at Manchester United, despite a turbulent spell that saw him temporarily edged out of the spotlight.
The Cameroon international is said to be determined to reassert himself as the club’s first-choice goalkeeper when he returns from his loan stint in Turkey, setting up a looming battle with Senne Lammens for supremacy at Old Trafford.
Onana’s exit last summer followed a difficult run marked by costly errors that amplified scrutiny around his performances. Seeking stability, United sanctioned a loan move to Trabzonspor, allowing the 29-year-old an opportunity to reset away from the intensity of the Premier League.
In his absence, the club moved swiftly to recruit Lammens from Royal Antwerp, a decision that has, for now, provided greater assurance between the posts.
Lammens’ arrival has coincided with a steadier defensive structure, offering United renewed confidence in goal. Yet Onana remains convinced that his story at Old Trafford is unfinished.
According to The Guardian, he still believes he has a future at the club and intends to compete for his place rather than seek a permanent move elsewhere.
His campaign in Turkey has mirrored the inconsistency that marred his final months in Manchester.
Across 19 league appearances, Onana has registered four clean sheets while conceding 26 goals, flashes of quality interspersed with familiar lapses.
