According to information from L’Equipe, Samuel Eto’o has reportedly decided to end his career with the Cameroon national team. This news follows Cameroon’s qualifying victory for the 2014 World Cup play-offs against Libya (1-0). When questioned about the matter at a press conference, Volker Finke, the coach of the Indomitable Lions, expressed reluctance to believe what was being reported in the press.
“Samuel Eto’o is a very great player. He is the only one capable of explaining his choices. Only he knows the decision he made,” said the German coach. “He has given so much to football and to Cameroon that he is the only one able to explain his decision,” he added.
It’s unclear whether the reported disagreement between Eto’o and Finke during the preparation for the match is related to Eto’o’s decision. However, Samuel Eto’o did not attend the post-match press conference to confirm or refute his decision to withdraw, and he also did not return to the hotel with his teammates. Aurélien Chedjou scored the only goal in Cameroon’s victory over Libya. The Indomitable Lions will discover their play-off opponent on September 16 after the draw for this final round.
