Benoît Angbwa has stepped down from his role as deputy secretary general of the Cameroon Football Federation (Fecafoot), citing harassment and untenable working conditions under the current leadership.
In a formal resignation letter addressed to Fecafoot president Samuel Eto’o, Angbwa confirmed his decision to leave the post, stating: “I have the honour to inform you of my resignation from the position of deputy secretary general of Fecafoot.”
The announcement, reported by the Cameroonian press on Monday, marks the latest in a string of high-profile exits from the federation’s administrative ranks.
Angbwa, 42, is not only a former Cameroon international but also a long-time teammate of Eto’o. The pair shared the pitch on 24 occasions between 2004 and 2012, including stints with the national team and Russian club Anzhi Makhachkala. Angbwa’s departure is seen as particularly symbolic given his close personal and professional history with the Fecafoot president.
Having transitioned into coaching following his retirement from professional football, Angbwa initially joined Fecafoot as the national teams coordinator. However, his position was dissolved in October 2024 amid a reshuffling of staff that saw several departments merged.
He was later brought back as deputy secretary general, a role that has now come to an abrupt end less than a year later.
In his letter, Angbwa outlined troubling reasons for his resignation, alleging a toxic working environment created by Secretary General Isaac Mandong.
“This carefully considered decision is motivated by working conditions that have become appalling and incompatible with the effective performance of my duties due to the moral and psychological harassment of which I was the victim at the hands of the current Secretary General,” he wrote.
The departure adds to mounting concerns surrounding internal governance at Fecafoot. While Angbwa’s claims have yet to be publicly addressed by the federation or by Mandong himself, his resignation underscores growing unrest within the organisation.
Fecafoot, under Eto’o’s presidency since December 2021, has undergone numerous structural and strategic shifts aimed at modernising and professionalising Cameroonian football.
However, these changes have not been without controversy. The federation has seen a steady turnover in key personnel, leading to questions about internal cohesion and management practices.
Angbwa’s resignation is likely to intensify scrutiny of Fecafoot’s leadership structure and its handling of internal disputes.
His allegations of harassment raise serious questions about the federation’s workplace culture and accountability mechanisms.
For now, Fecafoot has not issued an official statement in response to Angbwa’s departure.
The development, however, will inevitably add pressure on Eto’o’s administration to provide clarity and reassurance to stakeholders across Cameroonian football.
As the federation faces increasing turbulence behind the scenes, the resignation of a trusted figure like Angbwa may signal deeper fractures within its leadership—a situation that may demand immediate attention if Fecafoot hopes to maintain stability ahead of crucial international engagements.
