Alex Song Included in Cameroon’s 2014 World Cup Squad Despite Limited Club Appearances
Alex Song’s inclusion in Cameroon’s squad for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil has raised eyebrows, given his minimal playing time at FC Barcelona this season. The 27-year-old midfielder, who has been largely forgotten on the bench for most of the campaign, has only made around ten appearances for the Catalan giants, often sidelined by stiff competition in the midfield.
However, despite his lack of consistent action at club level, Song has been named in coach Volker Finke’s World Cup roster. Finke, speaking to Tribune Cameroun, justified the decision by pointing out Song’s experience and versatility.
“He played about ten matches, not to mention the national cup or the European League. He was also a starter. But there’s Busquets, who is a very great player and is favored by the coach. Being Busquets’ replacement is not a shame,” said Finke, acknowledging the high competition Song faced at Barcelona, particularly from the Spanish international Sergio Busquets.
While Finke defended Song’s position, he also noted that, at his age, the midfielder should be playing more regularly. “It’s certain that at his age, he has to play more. That’s why he has to think about his future,” Finke added, signaling the importance of regular football for the player moving forward.
Song’s selection for the World Cup is seen as a reflection of his experience and ability, despite his limited involvement with Barcelona in recent months. The Cameroonian will be hoping to prove his worth on the global stage, where he could have a key role in his national team’s midfield.
