This morning, Douala witnessed the passing of Moïse Bangtéké, a figure who had captured the city’s heart with his warm voice since 1992. He was 50 years old.
Tragically, he succumbed during his cherished morning jog, collapsing while pursuing his favorite activity. Rushed to Regional Military Hospital No. 2 in Douala, Moïse breathed his last shortly thereafter.
A versatile personality, Moïse Bangtéké developed an early passion for the microphone. Having learned the art of reporting in primary school, he swiftly became a commentator for football matches within his school. Two or three seasons ago, he resumed his role as a live commentator, broadcasting first division matches from the Reunification Stadium in Douala to the listeners of Suelaba Fm 105.
Beyond his involvement in sports broadcasting, Moïse managed Olympic Fc, a football club affiliated with the Departmental League, equivalent to the fourth division, in Nkam. Additionally, he served as the president of the Crtv-Littoral team, the regional public radio and television station to which Fm 105 was linked.
Despite facing weight challenges, Moïse Bangtéké fearlessly played football. He participated in matches representing the Association of Sports Journalists of Cameroon (Ajsc) Littoral region section. Mathieu Nathanaël Njog, the secretary-general of Ajsc-Littoral, expressed deep sorrow, describing Moïse as a loss to the profession and brotherhood, emphasizing his profound connection to sports.
Fernant Nenkam, a seasoned member of the local sports press, is still grappling with disbelief, stating, “To leave home for a sports activity and end up in a morgue is unsettling. It’s psychologically unbearable, to say the least.”
