Coton Sport Seal Third Straight Cameroonian League Title as Giants Fall
Coton Sport de Garoua have reaffirmed their dominance over Cameroonian football, clinching the 2015 Elite One title on Sunday after a tense goalless draw against Botafogo de Douala on the final day of the season.
The result was just enough to see the defending champions retain their crown, finishing one point ahead of closest rivals Union de Douala, who were held to a 1-1 draw by New Stars. It marks Coton Sport’s third consecutive league triumph, following title wins in 2013 and 2014.
The championship victory also secures Coton Sport’s place in next season’s CAF Champions League, where they will represent Cameroon on the continental stage once again.
While the title race came down to the wire, the final round of matches also delivered drama at the opposite end of the table. Three historic clubs—Canon de Yaoundé, Tonnerre de Yaoundé, and Njalla Quan Sport Academy—were relegated, ending their stay in the top flight. Canon and Tonnerre, both based in the capital, have deep-rooted histories in Cameroonian football, making their simultaneous drop all the more significant.
Elsewhere in the final round of Elite One action:
Unisport edged Astres 3-2 in Douala in a high-scoring encounter.
Wounded Lion beat Tonnerre 2-0, a result that sealed Tonnerre’s relegation.
Cosmos and Canon shared the spoils in Bafia with a 1-1 draw—insufficient for Canon’s survival hopes.
Yong Sports Academy edged Njalla Quan 1-0 in Bamenda, confirming the latter’s relegation.
Panther and Apejes played out a goalless draw in Bangangté.
Bamboutos and Dragon also finished level at 1-1 in Mbouda.
The match between UMS of Loum and Fovu Club of Baham in Njombé was postponed.
Coton Sport’s consistent form throughout the season, combined with key results in the closing stages, has seen them maintain their stronghold on Cameroonian football. However, the relegation of Canon and Tonnerre signals a shifting landscape in the domestic game, as newer or more stable clubs rise in prominence.
