Even upon his last-minute return to the squad, Samuel Eto’o remains under scrutiny, now facing criticism from a former coach of the Indomitable Lions, not just the Cameroonian sports public. Despite the unfortunate conclusion of his stint with the national team, Denis Lavagne continues to closely monitor the performances of the Indomitable Lions. Following their draw in Tunisia during the first leg of the 2014 World Cup play-offs, the French coach took a swipe at Samuel Eto’o.
Lavagne, recalling past incidents, stated, “He’s accustomed to it. He attempted to promote Kameni and Webo against Libya; Finke resisted, and initially, Eto’o sulked before declaring his retirement.” Speaking to L’Equipe, Lavagne further characterized the former Barça striker as a multi-faceted individual, saying, “He aspires to be a player, captain, coach, president of the federation, minister… He wields significant influence, even with adversaries who find themselves compelled to adapt. I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s plotting to oust Finke.”
