Calafiori says Arsenal’s ambitions demand elite additions amid Vinicius uncertainty

Arsenal defender Riccardo Calafiori says the club must continue recruiting players of the highest calibre as speculation grows over a possible move for Real Madrid forward Vinicius Junior.

Vinicius’ future at Real Madrid remains uncertain, with Arsenal linked with a move for the Brazil international during the current summer transfer window. The 25-year-old’s contract at the Spanish club runs until June 2027, but negotiations over an extension have yet to reach a conclusion.

Real Madrid have increased their initial offer to Vinicius, although it still does not meet the forward’s demands. The decision over his next step is now understood to rest with the player, leaving the situation unresolved.

Calafiori was asked about the reports following Arsenal’s 3-1 defeat by Real Betis in a friendly on Wednesday. According to Spanish newspaper AS, the Italy international was questioned about the speculation surrounding Vinicius and Bruno Guimaraes, as well as the influence their potential arrivals could have on Arsenal’s standing among Europe’s leading clubs.

The defender replied: “We are now at this level. We are at the top, and we want to win the league again. We want to be better than we were last season, if possible, so we need this type of player.”

Arsenal are reportedly close to completing a deal for Bruno Guimaraes. Should the club also secure Vinicius, it would represent a significant increase in their competitive strength, although no agreement for the Real Madrid forward has been finalised.

Vinicius has been central to the uncertainty surrounding Real Madrid’s next steps, with his existing contract still in place but his long-term position yet to be settled. Arsenal’s interest has added to the attention around the Brazilian, who remains one of the most prominent names linked with a move during the summer window.

Calafiori’s comments reflect Arsenal’s desire to build on their recent progress and challenge for major honours again. The club finished as runners-up in the Champions League and are seeking to improve on last season’s achievements, with the possible additions of Guimaraes and Vinicius viewed as moves that could strengthen their position among football’s elite.
