CAF Women’s Champions League 2024 kicks off in Morocco with Group A showdowns
The 2024 CAF Women’s Champions League launches this Saturday, October 9, in Morocco, as eight of Africa’s top women’s clubs vie for continental glory. This fourth edition of the tournament begins with two high-profile Group A clashes at the El Abdi Stadium in El Jadida.
In the opening match, seasoned Congolese club TP Mazembe faces tournament newcomers, the University of the Western Cape (UWC) from South Africa.
Mazembe, returning to the competition for a second consecutive time, hopes to leverage its experience against the South African side, which is debuting in the Champions League this year.
UWC, however, arrives with determination, aiming to make a strong impression on their first outing in Africa’s premier women’s club tournament.
The second match of the day sees Moroccan champions AS FAR take on Senegal’s AS Eagles of Medina.
AS FAR, the host team and a fan favorite, is expected to draw significant support as they embark on their journey to secure another title.
The Moroccan side is known for its skillful play and strong defense, factors that will be put to the test against a promising Senegalese squad eager to establish itself in this high-stakes competition.
The CAF Women’s Champions League, launched in 2020, has quickly grown in stature, with this year’s edition drawing particular excitement due to the diverse range of teams and rising talents across Africa.
The tournament’s format sees eight teams divided into two groups of four, with the top two teams from each group advancing to the semi-finals.
The championship match will take place later this month, crowning the best women’s club team on the continent.
With these initial matches setting the tone, fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see which clubs emerge as early favorites in the quest for African supremacy in women’s club football.
