CAF Suspends Nigeria’s Tejiri Rhiogbere for Spitting Incident
Tejiri Rhiogbere, substitute goalkeeper for Nigeria’s Warri Wolves, has been handed a 12-month suspension by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) following an incident during a CAF Cup match.
Rhiogbere was found guilty of spitting at an assistant referee in the clash against MK Etanchetié of the Democratic Republic of Congo. CAF has imposed a strict ban, ruling that the goalkeeper will be sidelined for the entirety of the coming year.
The suspension extends beyond CAF competitions, as the decision will be forwarded to FIFA, which may enforce a global ban on Rhiogbere, preventing him from playing even if he transfers to another country.
Warri Wolves are currently competing in the CAF Cup group stage promotion playoffs but have faced difficulties, including a 3-0 defeat in the first leg against AC Leopards.
The ban on Rhiogbere deals a significant blow to Warri Wolves, who will need to adjust their squad for the remainder of the campaign.
