CAF unveils new trophy ahead of 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in symbolic step for the game

CAF Unveils New Trophy Ahead of 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Symbolic Step for the Game

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially presented a new trophy for the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, unveiling the silverware during a special ceremony held on Wednesday ahead of the 2024 tournament.

The event, attended by key figures in African football and representatives from the qualified national teams, signals a bold new era for the women’s game on the continent.

The new trophy, more than a mere replacement of the previous design, is intended to reflect both the evolution and ambition of African women’s football.

CAF described it as a “symbol of change” that honours trailblazers of the past while beckoning a new generation of talent to carry the sport forward.

“This is more than a trophy,” a CAF statement declared. “It is a celebration of collective excellence, a tribute to those who have paved the way, and an emblem of the future that lies ahead. It represents the spirit, energy, and progress of African women’s football.”

Among those who applauded the unveiling was Lamia Boumehdi, coach of TP Mazembé, who expressed pride in the symbolic value of the new design.

“This trophy is not just a cup. It’s a recognition of the journey, the struggles, and the triumphs of African women in football,” Boumehdi said.

“It represents a weight of responsibility but also a beacon of pride.”

CAF’s latest move is part of a wider campaign to uplift and transform the women’s game on the continent. Alongside the trophy redesign, the organization has implemented a series of strategic reforms aimed at improving the visibility, investment, and competitive standard of women’s football across Africa.

The 2024 edition of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations will be hosted in Morocco and begins this Saturday, July 5, with an opening match between the host nation and Zambia.

Expectations are high for this year’s tournament, which features an expanded media presence, increased prize money, and enhanced logistical support for participating teams.

CAF President Patrice Motsepe has previously emphasized the importance of elevating women’s football as a central pillar of the confederation’s development strategy.

“African women’s football has immense potential, and CAF is committed to ensuring that it receives the attention and investment it deserves,” he noted during the last Executive Committee meeting.

The unveiling of the new trophy serves as a tangible symbol of that commitment. Crafted with a sleek and modern design, the new silverware reflects the dynamism of the women’s game.

CAF officials said the design process included input from former players, coaches, and designers to ensure the trophy embodied African heritage while projecting international appeal.

The response from current and former players has been overwhelmingly positive. Many see the new trophy as a motivator and a reminder that their contributions to the sport are finally being recognised on the grand stage.

As the teams prepare to battle for continental glory, the new trophy stands as both a prize and a promise—one that celebrates the strides already made and those still to come.

With this symbolic unveiling, CAF sends a clear message: the future of African women’s football is here, and it is bold, ambitious, and worthy of honour.
