CAF set to deliver verdict on Al Ahly and AS FAR Champions League match controversy next week
The Confederation of African Football is preparing to announce its final decisions regarding the incidents that occurred during the recent Champions League clash between Al Ahly of Egypt and Morocco’s AS FAR at Cairo International Stadium.
Supporters of both clubs are awaiting the verdict of CAF’s Disciplinary Committee after tensions and organisational concerns marred the fixture, which formed part of the final round of the group stage.
The continental body is expected to communicate its ruling by the middle of next week at the latest, following an urgent request from its General Secretariat to expedite the process ahead of the 2025 to 2026 CAF Champions League quarter final schedule.
According to reports a source, the Disciplinary Committee is set to convene hearings on Thursday involving all parties connected to the match. The encounter, which ended in a 1-1 draw, was overshadowed by issues highlighted in the official match reports.
In response to the events, CAF had earlier released a statement condemning and denouncing the incidents that accompanied the game at Cairo International Stadium.
Sources indicate that Thursday’s hearings represent the final procedural step before a definitive ruling is issued. The disciplinary measures under consideration relate specifically to the sixth and concluding group stage meeting between Al Ahly and AS FAR.
It has also emerged that CAF previously contacted AS FAR to seek clarification on certain observations contained in the match commissioner’s report.
However, inconsistencies within the documentation and formal complaints lodged by both clubs against each other prompted the committee to organise in depth hearings before reaching its conclusion.
A final decision, including any sanctions deemed appropriate, will be formally communicated to the clubs once deliberations are complete.
