Luxolo September, CAF’s Head of TV and Communications, has defended President Dr. Patrice Motsepe following widespread criticism over the awarding of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title to Morocco.

The tournament’s final was overshadowed by controversy when Senegal walked off the pitch late in the match to protest a penalty awarded to Morocco, which was ultimately missed.

Despite the dramatic protest, Senegal secured a 1-0 win in extra time.

However, on Wednesday, fans across Senegal were left shocked as CAF overturned the result, officially declaring Morocco—the Atlas Lions—as champions and nullifying Senegal’s victory.

The ruling sparked outrage across the continent, with critics questioning Motsepe’s leadership and alleging favouritism toward Morocco.

The CAF president’s public statements failed to quell the backlash.

Speaking amid the controversy, September sought to clarify that Dr Motsepe had no role in the Appeal Board’s decision.

“Here are some facts,” said September, a respected South African football administrator and media executive.

“CAF President does not sit or have a say in any judicial body at CAF.

“Disciplinary Board and Appeal Board comprised of judges and lawyers.

“Tribunals are appointed by CAF Congress.

“CAF President receives rulings on email like everyone post fact,” added the former Premier Soccer League communication representative.

Senegal has since confirmed its intention to appeal the ruling to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), hoping to overturn the CAF Appeal Board’s decision.
