CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe has led Africa’s football family in mourning the death of His Holiness, Pope Francis, remembering him as a remarkable figure of peace and humanity.
Dr. Motsepe said: “We are deeply saddened by the passing of the Holy Father, Pope Francis, who was an exceptional and outstanding symbol of peace, humility and compassion. He dedicated his life to serving our Heavenly Father, Jesus Christ, the Catholic Church, humanity and to uplifting the poor and marginalised.
“On behalf of the Member Associations of CAF who represent 54 African countries, we would like to extend our deepest condolences to the hundreds of millions of Catholics in Africa, Argentina and worldwide, as well as to the millions of individuals whose lives he touched and whom he inspired.
“We have also been informed that Pope Francis had a special passion for football and recognized its unique ability to unite people from different racial, ethnic and religious backgrounds.”
The funeral of Pope Francis was held on April 26, 2025, at St. Peter’s Square, drawing thousands including global leaders. He was buried at St. Mary Major in Rome.
