The Confederation of African Football (CAF) President, Patrice Motsepe, has commended Morocco for its substantial contributions to the growth and development of football across the African continent.
Speaking following the draw for the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), scheduled to be held in Morocco in July next year, Motsepe highlighted the nation’s exceptional commitment and world-class sports infrastructure.
“I want to start by thanking His Majesty King Mohammed VI, the President of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF), Fouzi Lekjaa, and the Moroccan people. I am very proud of Morocco’s role in the growth of football in Africa,” Motsepe said during his press conference.
The CAF President emphasized the exemplary quality of Morocco’s sports facilities, which he described as a resource “available for Africa.” He urged other nations on the continent to draw inspiration from Morocco’s approach to football development.
Motsepe praised the collaborative efforts between the Moroccan government, the FRMF, and other stakeholders, citing it as a benchmark for successful partnerships in Africa.
Looking ahead to the 2024 WAFCON, Motsepe expressed enthusiasm about the competition’s potential, attributing it to the rising quality of women’s football on the continent.
He also pointed to the commendable performances of African teams during the 2023 Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand as evidence of the sport’s growth.
“The level and quality of women’s football have improved greatly,” he noted. “We will witness the best of African women’s football, and the world will see the incredible talent of African players.”
The WAFCON group stage draw has set the stage for exciting matchups: hosts Morocco are in Group A with DR Congo, Senegal, and Zambia. Group B includes Nigeria, Tunisia, Algeria, and Botswana, while Group C features South Africa, Ghana, Mali, and Tanzania.
