CAF introduces Spidercam technology for the first time at AFCON 2025 in Morocco

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has confirmed that Spidercam technology will be used across all nine stadiums hosting the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco, marking a significant first in the tournament’s history.

The decision represents a major step forward in the evolution of African football broadcasting, bringing the competition’s production standards in line with some of the world’s most prestigious events.

Spidercam, renowned for its dynamic aerial shots and immersive pitch-level views, has already been deployed in high-profile tournaments such as the UEFA Champions League and the FIFA World Cup.

How Spidercam Works

The innovative system operates using a high-definition or 4K camera suspended by four cables attached to elevated points in the stadium. This setup allows the camera to glide smoothly above the pitch, offering a wide range of dynamic viewing angles and perspectives.

Two technicians manage the operation — one handling the movement and positioning of the camera, while the other focuses on framing the shots. Live footage is transmitted through fiber-optic cables, ensuring broadcast-quality clarity.

Spidercam is equipped with several built-in safety mechanisms, including collision-avoidance sensors, an emergency braking system, and redundant motors, ensuring seamless and secure operation throughout matches.

Morocco’s Experience with Spidercam

While this will be a first for AFCON, the technology is not entirely new to Moroccan audiences.

The National Radio and Television Company (SNRT) previously deployed Spidercam during the 2022 FIFA Club World Cup and the 2023 Morocco vs Brazil friendly, both held in the country.

In preparation for the continental showpiece, SNRT issued a public tender on July 30 for the large-scale implementation of Spidercam technology.

The total cost is estimated at 9.5 million dirhams (approximately $957,000), with budgets allocated for each venue hosting the tournament.

Stadiums Receiving Spidercam Technology

Each of the nine stadiums set to host AFCON 2025 matches will be equipped with the system:

  • Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium, Rabat – 1.43 million DH

  • Olympic Stadium, Rabat – 844,332 DH

  • Prince Moulay El Hassan Stadium, Rabat – 827,964 DH

  • El Barid Stadium, Rabat – 658,176 DH

  • Mohammed V Stadium, Casablanca – 1.37 million DH

  • Grand Stade, Marrakech – 1.21 million DH

  • Adrar Stadium, Agadir – 1.21 million DH

  • Fez Stadium – 850,140 DH

  • Ibn Batouta Stadium, Tangier – 1.16 million DH

A successful trial was conducted on 9 June 2025 during a friendly between Morocco and Benin at the Fez Stadium, paving the way for full deployment during the tournament.

A Milestone for African Broadcasting

In another historic milestone, CAF has awarded SNRT full production rights for all AFCON 2025 matches — a move that underscores the increasing confidence in African broadcasting institutions.

The decision signals a shift toward greater self-reliance and technological innovation in African football coverage.

All Spidercam units are expected to be fully installed and tested at least four days before the tournament’s kickoff on 21 December 2025.

This introduction of Spidercam at AFCON 2025 is set to transform the viewing experience for millions of fans worldwide, delivering cutting-edge visuals and broadcast quality that match the continent’s biggest football stage.
