The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has issued strict sanctions against the Libyan national football team following incidents that occurred during their recent clash with Nigeria in the fourth round of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.

The African football governing body has officially awarded a 3-0 victory to Nigeria, citing irregularities and misconduct that marred the match preparation.

Furthermore, Libya has been barred from hosting three home matches, effectively forcing the team to play these games without the support of their home crowd.

These penalties stem from grievances raised by the Nigerian Football Federation, which accused the Libyan authorities of subjecting the Nigerian team to poor treatment upon their arrival.

According to the complaints, the Nigerian squad faced significant delays of over 16 hours at the airport, during which they were reportedly denied proper access to food, beverages, and communication facilities.

Expressing his discontent, Nigerian team captain William Troost-Ekong voiced his frustration over the situation, stating that such conditions were unacceptable.

“It was extremely disappointing to face such hostility,” he said.

“We were left in a very difficult position, which ultimately led to our decision not to play the scheduled match.”

In response, a CAF spokesperson confirmed that the organization took the matter seriously and found the treatment of the Nigerian team to be in violation of standard protocols.

“This is a clear breach of conduct, and we are committed to ensuring such incidents do not occur in the future,” the spokesperson stated.

They also mentioned that the CAF Disciplinary Committee is set to convene at its next meeting to discuss potential additional actions against the Libyan football federation if deemed necessary.

The sanctions come as a major blow to Libya, which was already struggling in the AFCON qualifiers.

The decision to strip them of the chance to host matches with fans is expected to impact their campaign significantly.

Meanwhile, Nigeria, bolstered by the decision, looks set to secure a stronger position in their quest for a place at the 2025 AFCON tournament.

CAF’s swift action serves as a stern reminder to all member nations to uphold the spirit of fair play and respect for opposing teams, both on and off the field.
