The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has identified Benin’s national football team, the Cheetahs, as one of the teams to watch at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.
In an article published on its official website, CAF praised the Cheetahs for their recent progress and potential under coach Gernot Rohr.
“The Cheetahs finished second in Group D, ahead of Rwanda on goal difference. They will be looking to build on their remarkable run in the quarter-finals of AFCON 2019, which included a memorable elimination of Morocco.
Under the guidance of seasoned coach Gernot Rohr, Benin are well positioned to revive their Africa Cup of Nations adventure.
Rohr’s tactical mastery and proven leadership bring new hope to a team determined to make a lasting impression,” CAF stated.
Ranked behind Nigeria in Group D of the AFCON 2025 qualifiers, Benin secured their return to the tournament after a six-year absence.
This marks their fifth participation in the final phase of the competition.
With forward Steve Mounié serving as captain, the team has drawn attention for its standout performances, including a win over Nigeria and a draw with defending champions Ivory Coast.
However, CAF also announced disciplinary measures against Benin’s football federation. On Sunday, December 29, 2024, the governing body imposed a $5,000 fine for violating Article 45 of its disciplinary code.
An additional $50,000 penalty was levied, with $25,000 suspended, in response to misconduct by some Beninese officials during the AFCON qualifying match against Rwanda on October 15, 2024.
The match, held in Kigali, ended in a 2-1 defeat for Benin, a result that jeopardized their qualification prospects at the time.
CAF’s disciplinary committee criticized Beninese officials for their behavior following the loss, citing a lack of collaboration and professionalism.
Despite these setbacks, the Cheetahs remain a team of interest heading into AFCON 2025.
Under Rohr’s leadership, the squad aims to replicate and surpass the achievements of their 2019 campaign, where they reached the quarter-finals.
With a blend of experienced guidance and talented players, Benin looks poised to make a strong impression in Morocco.
CAF’s recognition underscores the team’s growing prominence on the continental stage, even as they navigate challenges both on and off the field.
