CAF hands over new school building in South Sudan through African Schools Football Championship

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has handed over a newly constructed school building at Libya One Primary School in Juba, South Sudan, as part of its efforts to use football to support education and community development across the continent.

The project, funded through prize money from the CAF African Schools Football Championship in partnership with the Motsepe Foundation, provides additional educational infrastructure for the school and is expected to benefit 310 pupils.

The completed facility includes a new school building featuring two additional classrooms and two administration offices, addressing some of the infrastructure needs of the institution.

CAF Director of Member Associations Sarah Mukuna said the initiative demonstrates the potential of football to deliver a lasting impact beyond the game itself.

“Football can create a lasting impact beyond the pitch,” Mukuna said, highlighting the role of the project in supporting schools and communities across Africa.

The handover in Juba forms part of a broader CAF initiative linked to the African Schools Football Championship, with proceeds and resources being channelled into projects designed to leave a tangible legacy in participating communities.

The programme is built around the idea that football can serve as a vehicle for development, particularly by supporting education and creating better environments for young people.

The South Sudan project follows a similar school infrastructure handover in Ethiopia, while CAF says further projects are planned in South Africa, Egypt, Guinea, The Gambia, Benin and Seychelles.

The projects are being implemented as part of CAF’s wider commitment to ensuring that the benefits associated with football extend beyond competitions and into local communities.

For the pupils at Libya One Primary School, the new classrooms and administrative offices are expected to provide additional space and improve the school’s learning and administrative environment.

The initiative also underlines the growing focus on the CAF African Schools Football Championship as more than a youth football competition, with its legacy programmes seeking to connect sporting development with education and community infrastructure.

CAF’s latest intervention in South Sudan therefore represents another example of the organisation’s efforts to use football-related resources to support long-term social development across Africa.
