Executive Council member of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Samir Sabha has launched a scathing attack on the federation’s leadership, describing the administrative situation as chaotic and accusing Secretary-General Veron Mosengo-Omba of occupying the position illegally, while calling for his immediate resignation.
Speaking to news portal “the Guardian”, Samir Sabha, who is the president of the Mauritanian Football Federation stressed that the appointment of Mosengo-Omba contravenes the organisation’s statutes.
He argued that the situation undermines institutional credibility and stressed that decisive action is required to restore transparency and order at the continental football governing body (CAF).
“According to the statute, he is currently holding the position illegally. I don’t think the Secretary-General is in a legal situation that allows him to make decisions or sign documents, I appeal to the president to correct this situation, we have to respect the laws regarding this issue, it is clear.”
Per the rules of CAF Employment Manuel, the mandatory retirement age for employees is 63 years, with the possibility of extending only one-time for three years by decision of the President or Secretary-General.
According to Samir Sabha, Veron Mosengo-Onba took office in March 2021 at the age of 61, and reached the legal retirement age on October 15, 2022, before CAF president Patrice Motsepe granted him an exceptional extension that ended on October 15, 2025.
Quizzed about Motsepe’s position, the Mauritanian FA boss said, “Patrice Motsepe is a very good person, this is my personal opinion. But sometimes it happens that things are not going in the right direction. There are issues that need to be corrected.”
Veron Mosengo-Omba was absent from the CAF meeting held in Tanzania last Friday due to an emergency family matter.
According to Samir Sabha, he would have expressed his displeasure to the secretary general of the continental football governing body had Mosengo-Omba attended the meeting.
“If he was present, I would have expressed my position publicly, to inform everyone, including the president, that I do not agree with Mr. Musengo sitting in
