The preliminary round of the CAF Confederation Cup continued on Saturday, following the opening matches on Friday, which featured Stade Gabésien’s 1-1 draw with AS Bakaridjan and Al Ittihad’s commanding 4-1 win over AS Sonidep. Saturday’s fixtures produced several notable results across the continent, highlighting the competitive nature of Africa’s secondary club competition.

In Comoros, Fomboni Moheli secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Burundi’s Athletico Olympic, giving the home side a crucial advantage heading into the second leg. Meanwhile, South Africa’s Bidvest Wits demonstrated their strength on the road, defeating Lightars FC of Seychelles 3-0 in an authoritative performance that underscored their ambitions for continental success.

Harare City of Zimbabwe edged past Madagascar’s AS Adema in a thrilling 3-2 encounter. The tightly contested match saw both sides display attacking flair, but the Zimbabwean club ultimately held on to take the win. Similarly, Egypt’s Misr Makassa overcame Ethiopia’s Defence Force 3-1, showing their experience and tactical maturity in navigating African competition.

Rwanda’s Police FC also celebrated a victory, beating Atlabara from South Sudan 3-1, while Uganda’s SC Villa secured an impressive 1-0 away win at Watani Khartoum in Sudan. These results reflect the increasing competitiveness of East African clubs in continental tournaments.

South Africa’s Ajax Cape Town claimed a 2-1 victory over Angola’s Sagrada Esperança, highlighting the depth of talent in the South African league. Meanwhile, Nigerian side Akwa United edged out Congo’s Vita Club Mokanda 1-0, demonstrating their defensive resilience and ability to capitalize on key scoring opportunities.

Finally, Ivory Coast’s Sporting Gagnoa dominated Mali’s USFAS with a 2-0 win, setting up a promising position for the return leg. Across the board, Saturday’s matches showcased the variety of footballing styles present in African club competitions, from disciplined defensive displays to high-intensity attacking play.

These results have set the stage for exciting second-leg encounters in the coming weeks. Clubs with narrow victories or away goals, such as SC Villa and Akwa United, will be hoping to maintain or extend their advantage, while teams like USFAS and Athletico Olympic will be looking for redemption as they host the return legs.

The preliminary round of the CAF Confederation Cup serves as an important platform for clubs across Africa to test their squads, gain international experience, and aspire to compete in the later stages of the tournament. As the competition progresses, teams will aim to consolidate their performances and leverage home advantage where possible, knowing that every goal and point could prove decisive in the quest to advance to the group stages.

With the action heating up, African football fans can look forward to a series of competitive and engaging fixtures over the coming weeks, featuring clubs from across the continent battling for continental glory and the chance to make a mark on the CAF Confederation Cup.
