Horoya AC Determined to Overcome Ittihad Tangier in CAF Cup Playoff First Leg
Horoya Athletic Club of Conakry is gearing up for a crucial encounter this Sunday at the Stade du 28 Septembre, where they will host Ittihad Riadi of Tangier in the first leg of the CAF Confederation Cup playoff round. The match marks another important step for the Guinean champions, who are determined to reach the group stage of the competition after falling short in the CAF Champions League.
Horoya, who currently dominate the Guinean domestic league, have been one of the most consistent clubs in West Africa over the past decade. Despite their impressive form at home, the team led by French coach Victor Zvunka faced disappointment in the Champions League, where they were eliminated by Espérance de Tunis, one of the continent’s powerhouses. Now, the club from Matam is refocusing its ambitions on the CAF Confederation Cup, with the clear objective of going deep into the tournament.
Coach Victor Zvunka, speaking on the club’s official website, expressed confidence in his players’ ability to deliver a strong performance in front of their home crowd.
“In the African campaign, we sometimes lack efficiency, whereas in the league, we score a lot of goals, even though we miss a lot of chances there too,” he explained. “This year, it’s very interesting because the players understand what’s at stake. Reaching the group stage would give them six more matches, which is a great opportunity for their development and for the club.”
Zvunka emphasized that the experience gained from facing top African clubs like Espérance de Tunis has strengthened Horoya’s squad.
“Playing against big clubs helps us progress. No worries — my players are all fit to face IR Tangier. We have gathered a lot of information about this team from the Straits, and we even made a video session to prepare ourselves better for the match,” he added.
The coach also made it clear that Horoya’s goal is not only to win but to do so convincingly.
“We want to achieve a good result here in Conakry, with plenty of goals, to secure a comfortable advantage before the second leg in Tangier,” Zvunka stated confidently.
Ittihad Tangier, meanwhile, are newcomers to the continental stage and face a difficult challenge against one of Africa’s most experienced teams. The Moroccan side, known for their disciplined defense and quick counterattacks, will be looking to keep the scoreline close before returning home for the second leg. However, Horoya’s depth, experience, and attacking firepower make them favorites in this first leg.
Backed by passionate home supporters, Horoya AC will aim to take a significant step toward qualification for the CAF Confederation Cup group stage. A commanding result in Conakry would not only boost their confidence but also affirm their status as one of the leading clubs in African football.
For Zvunka and his men, Sunday’s match is more than just another fixture — it is an opportunity to reclaim pride after their Champions League exit and to continue Horoya’s quest for continental glory.
