CAF Confederation Cup: AC Leopards Host Coton Sport in Crucial Group Stage Clash
AC Leopards of Dolisie are set to host Cameroon’s Coton Sport of Garoua this Tuesday in a pivotal CAF Confederation Cup group stage encounter. Originally scheduled for May, the match was postponed due to the 2015 African Cup of Nations qualifier between Congo and Namibia.
This fixture marks the opening day of the group stage for both sides, who enter the game with strong positions. Coton Sport currently tops the group with six points, having secured victories over AS Real Bamako and ASEC Mimosas. AC Leopards trail closely behind with four points, following a win against the Malians and a draw with the Ivorians. The winner of Tuesday’s match will claim sole leadership in the group, positioning themselves favorably for a spot in the semi-finals.
AC Leopards remain unbeaten in the Congolese league, chasing a third straight national title, while Coton Sport, despite recent struggles in Cameroon’s Ligue 1, are eager to reclaim top form and maintain their continental ambitions.
Coach Didier Gomes da Rosa of Coton Sport is confident. Speaking to CamFoot, he said: “We have shown self-denial and solidarity so far to be at the top of the group. We just need to keep this state of mind.”
The two sides have met twice before in the CAF competition, both in the 2010 group stage. AC Leopards claimed a 3-1 home victory but were defeated 2-0 in Garoua, adding an extra layer of rivalry and anticipation to this encounter.
Kickoff is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. GMT, with both teams vying to strengthen their bids for continental glory.
