CAF CONGRESS: ANOUMA REITERATES HIS CANDIDACY

The former president of the Ivorian Football Federation (FIF), Jacques Anouma, has officially declared his candidacy to succeed Issa Hayatou in the upcoming elections scheduled for March in Morocco. Anouma asserts that he does not fall under the eligibility conditions outlined in the document adopted in Seychelles.

The deadline for submitting candidatures for the presidency, either in succession or not, opened on September 10 and is set to close on December 3, 2012. While awaiting the submission of candidacy files by the Ivorian federation, Jacques Anouma contends that the Algerian amendment, which specifies that “to be a candidate for the presidency of CAF, one must be or have been a member of the executive committee of CAF,” does not apply to him. He clarified, “I am and remain a member of the CAF executive committee, and no provision makes any distinction between the members of this committee,” as he addressed the press during the Ivory Coast vs. Senegal match in the final round of qualifiers for the African Cup of Nations, South Africa 2013.

As of now, two candidates have been announced for this congress. The declared candidate, Jacques Anouma, will be in contention against the outgoing president, Issa Hayatou.
