Egyptian giants, Zamalek, let a comfortable lead slip away in a dramatic 2-2 draw against Nigerian side Enyimba on Sunday evening in the second round of Group D in the CAF Confederation Cup.
The visitors looked in control early, opening the scoring in the 33rd minute through Tunisian forward Seifeddine Jaziri, who capitalized on a defensive lapse.
Zamalek doubled their lead in the 41st minute when Palestinian winger Omar Farag found the back of the net with a well-timed finish, giving the team a commanding advantage.
However, defensive frailties and goalkeeping mishaps proved costly for Zamalek.
Enyimba clawed their way back with a goal just before halftime from Ifeanyi Ehimekwele, who capitalised on a defensive error.
In the 57th minute, Ofri Shindo levelled the score, exploiting another mistake in Zamalek’s backline, compounded by indecisive handling from goalkeeper Mohamed Awad.
The draw leaves Zamalek atop Group D with four points under Portuguese coach Jose Gomes, having won their opening match.
Enyimba, meanwhile, secured their first point of the competition after losing their opener to Al-Masry of Port Said.
While Zamalek remains in a strong position, their inability to hold on to a lead raises questions about their defensive solidity as the competition progresses.
