Zamalek of Cairo travel to Berkane this Sunday for the first leg of the CAF Confederation Cup final against Renaissance Sportive de Berkane, aiming to secure a strong position ahead of the return match in Egypt.
Confidence runs high at the Egyptian club, which has already eliminated two Moroccan sides in this year’s Confederation Cup qualifiers, defeating Ittihad Tanger and Hassania Agadir. The club’s past successes against Moroccan teams have fueled optimism among both players and fans. “At one point, we were at the bottom of the group and everyone was saying that we were eliminated and that we had lost our chances. But we had great confidence in our quality and experience, and here we are in the final,” said Amir Mortada, director of Zamalek’s football section, as reported by hebdo.ahram.org.eg.
This final marks Zamalek’s return to continental glory three years after their defeat in the CAF Champions League final. Facing RS Berkane, the Cairo side hopes to claim their first African title since winning the African Super Cup in 2003. The team enters the matchup with determination, aiming to leverage their experience and depth to secure a decisive result in Morocco.
Mortada highlighted the strength of the squad as a key factor in Zamalek’s success this season. “We have gone through some difficult times this season, but we have a large squad, and all the players, whether starters or substitutes, have proven their qualities, and that is why we are in full competition in all competitions this season,” he said. With confidence high and momentum on their side, Zamalek will look to start the two-legged final on the front foot, hoping to edge closer to continental triumph.
