CAF Confederation Cup: Wydad keeps Amine Benhachem in charge ahead of OC Safi club despite uncertain future
Moroccan giants Wydad are currently undergoing a critical period of technical evaluation following inconsistent performances across domestic and continental competitions, raising questions about the future of head coach Mohamed Amine Benhachem.
The club’s management is reportedly aware that the team’s recent results cannot be ignored as key fixtures approach. Growing pressure from supporters and varying opinions within the club have intensified the debate over whether the Moroccan tactician should remain in charge.
Although Benhachem has made visible efforts to restructure the squad, he has struggled to resolve several internal issues within the team. As a result, the club’s leadership has held evaluation meetings with the technical staff, creating uncertainty about the coach’s long-term future.
Despite the speculation, recent press reports indicate that Wydad’s management has decided to retain Benhachem for now, at least until the upcoming match against Olympique Safi in the first leg of the CAF Confederation Cup quarter finals scheduled for next Sunday.
Sources quoted by the Moroccan outlet Hesport stated that reports suggesting the coach would be dismissed before the match were inaccurate.
At the same time, the club’s leadership has reportedly begun examining possible alternatives for the coaching role as a precautionary measure. The move comes amid growing criticism from supporters regarding the team’s tactical performances in recent matches.
Wydad are aiming to conclude the season on a positive note while keeping alive their hopes of securing qualification for the CAF Champions League next season.
Meanwhile, the Moroccan Professional League announced yesterday that the domestic competition will be temporarily suspended in order to allow clubs involved in continental tournaments to focus on their upcoming knockout stage matches in both the CAF Champions League and the CAF Confederation Cup.
