CAF Confederation Cup: Wydad defeat Kotoko in Accra to claim first-leg advantage

Asante Kotoko will have it all to do in the second leg of their CAF Confederation Cup playoff after suffering a 1-0 home defeat to Wydad at the Accra Sports Stadium on Sunday.

Kotoko started the match brightly and nearly took the lead within the first 10 minutes, but they failed to convert a clear scoring opportunity.

That miss would prove costly as Wydad slowly began to settle into the game, gaining control of possession and creating dangerous chances.

Goalkeeper Mohammed Camara was called into action multiple times in the first half, making crucial saves to keep Kotoko in the game. However, Wydad’s sustained pressure finally broke through early in the second half. In the 47th minute, a corner from the visitors was not properly cleared by the Kotoko defence, leaving a Wydad player unmarked to slot home from close range.

Just two minutes later, Kotoko’s situation worsened as Camara received a red card for handling the ball outside his penalty area while stopping a goal-bound attempt.

With the Porcupine Warriors reduced to ten men, Wydad seized control of the match and continued to dominate, creating several chances that could have widened the scoreline.

Despite the numerical disadvantage, Kotoko showed determination and defended resolutely to prevent further goals, but they struggled to threaten in attack.

The result leaves Kotoko needing a big performance in Casablanca to overturn the deficit and keep their Confederation Cup campaign alive.
