CAF Confederation Cup: Wydad AC thump Asante Kotoko 6-1 on aggregate to reach group stage
Asante Kotoko’s campaign in the 2025/26 CAF Confederation Cup ended in disappointment after a 5-1 defeat to Wydad Athletic Club on Friday night at the Mohammed V Stadium in Casablanca.
The defeat meant that Wydad AC are through to the group stage of the competition courtesy of a 6-1 aggregate triumph.
Having lost the first leg 1-0 in Accra, Kotoko went into the second leg needing a positive result but were overwhelmed by a dominant Wydad side.
The Moroccan club took control early, but Kotoko captain Samba O’Neil briefly gave his side hope with a powerful header in the 19th minute to make it 1-1 on the night.
That equaliser only spurred Wydad on, as the hosts responded with four unanswered goals in a commanding attacking display. Hamza Hannouri, Stephane Aziz Ki, Thembinkosi Lorch, Oussama Zemraoui, and Mohammed Bouchouari all found the back of the net to book their team’s place in the group stage.
Kotoko showed moments of resilience in the early exchanges but struggled to contain Wydad’s pace, precision, and technical quality over the course of the match.
Head coach Abdul Karim Zito will now turn his attention to the Ghana Premier League as Kotoko seek to regroup from the continental setback.
