Head coach of Zamalek Moataz Gamal is confident his outfit will win their group despite succumbing to a defeat in the penultimate CAF Confederation Cup group stage match against Zesco United.
The Zambian outfit pulled off a major upset in the high-stake clash on Sunday, defeating the Egyptian powerhouse to secure first win in Group D.
The match, held at the Levy Mwanawasa Stadium ended 1-0 in favour of the Zambian giants, posing threat to Zamalek’s quarterfinal qualification ambition.
Speaking in an interview, Moataz Gamal asserted the side will emerge victorious in their final group game against Kaizer Chiefs to secure top spot.
“We have a shortage of players due to injuries, but I didn’t like to talk about it before the match. I thank the players for their efforts; none of them held back anything.”
“Our chances in the tournament are still alive, and God willing, we will win the next match and top the group.”
Having succumbed to a defeat, the Egyptian giants has dropped from the top spot in Group D to second, with Kaizer Chief overtaking taking them.
The South African giants sit top of the group with 10 points, followed by Zamalek with eight points, while Al Masry occupies third position with seven points. Despite the win, Zesco United find themselves bottom of the table with just three points.
Zamalek will host Kaizer Chiefs in the final round of the group stage in Cairo, a match that could determine the winner of the group.
The Egyptian giants needs to win the last match to qualify for the quarter-finals without considering any other factors, but any stumble coupled with an Egyptian victory could cause them to be eliminated from the tournament.
