Renaissance Sportive de Berkane (RSB) claimed a dramatic 1-0 victory over Egypt’s Zamalek on Sunday in the first leg of the CAF Confederation Cup final, thanks to a last-minute goal from Togolese striker Kodjo Fo-Doh Laba in the 94th minute. The goal, coming at the very end of the match, has given the Moroccan side a significant advantage heading into the return leg in Cairo next Sunday.

For RSB, reaching the final marked a historic achievement, as it is the first time the club has competed in an African competition final. Against Zamalek, Laba and his teammates demonstrated determination, tactical discipline, and composure under pressure, culminating in the decisive goal that sent fans into celebration. The match was a showcase of the team’s growth and capability, proving that Berkane is now a formidable force in continental football.

The victory has provided a psychological edge, but the club is fully aware that the tie will only be decided in Egypt. RSB coach Mounir Jaouani expressed his satisfaction with the narrow win while emphasizing the importance of their performance on the pitch. “It would have been unfortunate to end this match without scoring this goal, which crowns the style of play we developed and the numerous opportunities we created,” Jaouani said. “We were aware that the trophy would be decided in Egypt, and that’s why we insisted on traveling there first with a strong mindset,” he added.

Assistant coach Adil Serraj stressed that the team must maintain its focus and aim to score in Alexandria during the second leg. “Our job now is to go to Egypt and look for goals, while maintaining the defensive stability that allowed us to finish this match with a one-goal lead,” he said.

RSB captain Mohamed Aziz echoed his coaching staff’s message, reminding his teammates that while Zamalek is a tough opponent, Berkane has the experience and confidence to continue their winning form. “During our run in this CAF Confederation Cup, we have won several away matches. We can do it again in Alexandria and bring the trophy home,” he said.

Kodjo Fo-Doh Laba’s late goal not only secured the win but also highlighted his pivotal role throughout the tournament. His ability to remain decisive in crucial moments makes him a key figure for RSB as they prepare to face the challenging Egyptian side away from home.

As the club prepares for the return leg in Cairo, all eyes will be on how Renaissance Berkane manages the pressures of an away fixture against a historically successful team like Zamalek. The first-leg victory has given them a platform, but maintaining composure, scoring away goals, and continuing to execute their game plan will be essential if they are to claim their first-ever continental trophy.

In summary, Berkane’s 1-0 win sets the stage for a thrilling second leg, with coach Jaouani, captain Aziz, and Laba leading the charge. With confidence high and momentum on their side, RSB will be eager to make history and lift the CAF Confederation Cup for the first time.
