CAF Confederation Cup: Kotoko beat Kwara Utd 1-0 to complete double over Nigerian side
Ghanaian giants Asante Kotoko secured a 1-0 victory against Kwara United on Sunday afternoon in their second-leg fixture with the Nigerian opponent in the CAF Confederation Cup preliminary stage.
The Porcupine Warriors went into the return leg with a narrow advantage, having triumphed 4-3 in a thrilling first leg in Kumasi. In Abeokuta, Kotoko adopted a disciplined approach, frustrating their hosts and striking at the right moment to seal the tie.
Forward Hubert Gyau delivered the decisive goal, ensuring a 5-3 aggregate victory for the Ghanaian giants and setting up a high-profile clash with Moroccan powerhouse Wydad Casablanca in the next round.
Kwara United, forced to play at the MKO Abiola Stadium instead of their Ilorin Sports Stadium due to renovation works, opened the gates for fans to rally behind the team. Despite the strong support, they could not break through Kotoko’s compact defensive structure.
The result also underlined head coach Karim Zito’s remarkable record on the continent, with the former Dreams FC boss now unbeaten in eight away matches in the CAF Confederation Cup.
