Kaizer Chiefs cruised to a vital 1 0 win over ZESCO United in their third Group D fixture in the CAF Confederation Cup on Sunday in a game played at a challenging Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola.
The result leaves Amakhosi third in the group standings on four points, level with Zamalek, who were due to face fellow Egyptians and group leaders Al Masry later in the day.
The victory has strengthened Chiefs’ belief that they can complete a double over ZESCO and keep their hopes of reaching the knockout stage alive when the sides meet again in the return fixture at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban on Sunday.
Confidence within the Chiefs camp has been boosted by the significance of the result, as they became the first PSL team to defeat ZESCO on their home turf. The outcome also revived memories of their previous meeting in South Africa seven years ago, when Chiefs emerged victorious in the same competition.
The success in Ndola marked a second straight win since competitive action resumed, following a 1 0 league victory over Golden Arrows earlier in the week.
That league triumph also highlighted Chiefs’ defensive solidity, with goalkeeper Brandon Petersen recording his third consecutive clean sheet, a run that has added further confidence as the season gathers momentum.
