Head coach of Kaizer Chiefs, Khalil Ben Youssef, has expressed shock regarding Zamalek’s starting lineup against Zesco United in their penultimate CAF Confederation Cup group stage clash.
The Zambian powerhouse pulled off a major upset at the weekend, defeating the Egyptian powerhouse to secure first win in Group D.
The match, held at the Levy Mwanawasa Stadium ended 1-0 in favour of the Zambian giants, posing threat to Zamalek’s quarterfinal qualification ambition.
Meanwhile, Kaizer Chiefs had achieved a 2-1 victory over Al Masry to go top of their group ahead if the final round of games.
Speaking to MBC Egypt, Ben Youssef asserted he was surprised with Zamalek’s starting lineup, stressing it was devoid of professionals.
“Zamalek is one of the biggest teams in Egypt, and regardless of the stadium where the match is, its fans will be present in force.”
“I haven’t watched the Zamalek vs. Zesco match, in which a number of young players participated, yet, and I will watch it tomorrow, but I was surprised by the lineup that played the match because it was almost devoid of professionals, and I don’t know the reason behind that.”
“Yesterday against Al Masry, we were almost playing against Abdel Rahim Daghmoum, who made the difference throughout the match and was everywhere on the field. Also, Salah Mohsen was dangerous, moving around a lot, and was characterized by speed and distinctive headers.”
“I think Nabil Emad’s absence is a big loss for Zamalek because he is one of the outstanding players in the midfield.”
He concluded: “We will arrive in Egypt at dawn next Thursday to play against Zamalek.”
Kaizer Chiefs are preparing to face Zamalek in the final round of the group stage on Saturday, February 14. The South African team leads the group with 10 points, followed by Zamalek with 8 points, and then Al Masry with 7 points.
