CAF Confederation Cup: Goalkeeping blunder costs Zamalek vital win against Kaizer Chiefs
Zamalek saw a precious away victory slip through their fingers in stoppage time, drawing 1-1 with Kaizer Chiefs in South Africa in the CAF Confederation Cup group stage.
The White Knights made a dream start, as Tunisian striker Seifeddine Jaziri smashed home from a corner in the third minute, before having a second goal ruled out just three minutes later for a foul on a defender.
Kaizer Chiefs grew into the game, repeatedly testing goalkeeper Mohamed Sobhi, striking the post and forcing several saves as Zamalek gradually dropped deeper. Injuries to Bradley Cross and then Gaston Sirino disrupted the hosts, but they kept pushing, especially down the flanks, while Zamalek threatened on counters through Jaziri, Chico Banza and Juan Bezera.
In the second half, Chiefs made attacking changes and pinned Zamalek back, though the visitors still missed big chances through substitute Adi El Dabbagh and others as they looked to kill the game. Deep into added time, with Zamalek defending desperately, a harmless-looking cross was turned into his own net by Sobhi in the 90+6 minute, gifting Chiefs a dramatic equaliser.
The result leaves Zamalek on four points in second place in Group D, two behind leaders Al Masry, who beat Zesco United 3-2, while Kaizer Chiefs claim their first point and Zesco remain bottom.
