CAF Confederation Cup: Esperance Tunis Crash Out After Home Defeat to Al Ahly
Esperance de Tunis have been eliminated from the CAF Confederation Cup, following a fourth defeat in five group-stage matches. The Tunisian giants were beaten 1-0 at home by Egypt’s Al Ahly on Saturday evening at the Radès Stadium, ending any remaining hopes of reaching the semi-finals.
The decisive moment came early. In just the 5th minute, Ghanaian striker John Antwi capitalised on defensive lapses to score what proved to be the only goal of the match. The early setback set the tone for José Anigo’s side, who struggled throughout the evening to find rhythm or creativity in the final third.
Esperance’s defensive frailties were nearly punished again when Ramadan Sobhi came close to doubling the visitors’ lead in the 22nd minute. However, goalkeeper Ben Cherifia produced a vital stop to keep the scoreline respectable. Despite that lifeline, the hosts failed to respond. The second half saw little improvement from the Sang et Or, who looked sluggish and out of ideas.
Al Ahly, on the other hand, managed the game with calm authority. Content to defend their lead, the Cairene club neutralised any threat from their Tunisian opponents and appeared physically superior as the match wore on. Esperance, who once dominated the continent’s top competitions, looked a shadow of their former selves.
The result leaves Al Ahly on the verge of qualification for the semi-finals. They will officially advance on Sunday should Étoile du Sahel avoid defeat against Stade Malien.
For Esperance, this year’s Confederation Cup campaign has been one of frustration and underperformance. With four losses from five matches, their early exit is a significant disappointment for a club of such pedigree. Questions will now be asked about the squad’s form, depth, and direction under Anigo, especially after failing to register a single home win in the competition.
As the club regroups for domestic duties, Esperance supporters will hope for a swift and decisive response from the management and players alike.
