Kenyan debutants Nairobi United produced a stunning performance in the Confederation Cup on Sunday, defeating Tunisian heavyweights Etoile du Sahel 2–0 in a thrilling encounter at the Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi.

Roared on by an electrifying home crowd, the newcomers played with confidence and intensity against one of Africa’s most established clubs, showing no signs of stage fright on their continental debut.

Nairobi United broke the deadlock in the 37th minute when Ovella Ochieng pounced on a defensive mistake to finish from close range, sending the stadium into raptures.

Buoyed by the opener, the hosts came out stronger in the second half and doubled their lead in the 52nd minute. John Otieno delivered a moment of brilliance, curling a superb strike into the top corner to further lift the atmosphere and put Nairobi firmly in control.

Etoile du Sahel, clearly unsettled, found it difficult to dictate play as the home side continued to press aggressively and defend with discipline throughout the match.

The Tunisian giants now face a major challenge heading into the return leg in Sousse, where they must overturn the two-goal deficit to keep their Confederation Cup hopes alive.

For Nairobi United, this victory is a statement of intent and places them among the emerging forces to watch in the competition.

They will need to deliver in the reverse fixture to advance into the next stage of the competition.
