CAF Confederation Cup: CR Belouizdad reach semi-finals on away goals
CR Belouizdad have secured a place in the semi-finals of the CAF Confederation Cup after a goalless draw at home against Al Masry Port-Saïd on Saturday evening.
The Algerian side progressed from the quarter-final tie on the away goals rule, following a 1-1 draw in the first leg in Egypt a week earlier.
The result at the Nelson Mandela Stadium in Baraki proved sufficient to send the “Red and Whites” through to the last four of the competition.
Despite failing to score in front of their home supporters, CR Belouizdad produced a performance marked by attacking intent and several clear chances.
The hosts controlled large periods of the match and repeatedly tested the Egyptian defence, although they were ultimately unable to find a breakthrough.
Among the standout performers was Tunisian forward Ben Hammouda, who posed a consistent threat, particularly during the first half.
His movement and involvement in attacking play created difficulties for Al Masry, even if the decisive goal did not arrive.
Qualification for the semi-finals represents a significant moment in the club’s history.
It marks only the second time CR Belouizdad have reached the last four of a continental competition, the previous occasion dating back to the 1996 Cup Winners’ Cup.
Attention now turns to the remaining quarter-final fixtures, which will determine their next opponents.
CR Belouizdad will face the winner of the tie between Zamalek SC of Egypt and AS Otohô of Congo in the semi-finals, scheduled to be played over two legs on April 12 and 19.
Elsewhere in the competition, USM Alger, the other Algerian representative, are set to play their quarter-final match against AS Maniema.
That encounter is scheduled for Sunday evening at the July 5 Stadium in Algiers.
The remaining fixtures also include a meeting between Wydad Casablanca and Olympique Club Safi, with all ties contributing to the final composition of the semi-final line-up.
