Confederation Cup: Confident Stade Malien Ready to Face Espérance Again
Stade Malien will host Tunisian giants Espérance Sportive de Tunis this Sunday in Bamako for Matchday 4 of the CAF Confederation Cup, buoyed by their surprise victory in the previous round.
The Malian champions reignited their campaign with a vital 1–0 away win in Tunis, despite being reduced to ten men. That result, following an earlier defeat and a draw, has restored hope in their bid to qualify from the group stage.
Franco-Moroccan coach Brahim El Yamani believes mental strength will be the key to success in the second half of the group campaign.
“The first-leg results were mixed for us — a loss, a draw, and then a win,” El Yamani told reporters. “But I’m optimistic. The return fixtures will be determined by mental fortitude, and our win in Tunis, playing 10 against 11, gave the squad a significant psychological boost. We’re heading into this next match with growing confidence.”
A UEFA A-licensed coach and graduate of the French Football Federation, El Yamani has placed strong emphasis on discipline and tactical organization since taking charge of the Bamako-based club.
Beyond this weekend’s clash, he reflected on the broader state of African football, arguing that investment in youth development and tactical education remains a missing link in the continent’s progress.
“Africa is brimming with talent,” he said. “Our football has made real strides, but we’re still facing serious tactical limitations. This comes down to the lack of structured youth development at most clubs.”
He continued: “Tactical intelligence and the ability to apply technical skills for the benefit of the team must be developed from a young age. Without proper academies and a scientific approach at club level, African football’s full potential won’t be realized.”
As Stade Malien prepares for this crucial home fixture, they are hoping to build on momentum and move closer to a rare semi-final appearance. Victory on Sunday would mark a significant step in their continental journey — and a major statement against one of Africa’s most experienced sides.
