The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has issued a strong statement on the disappointing chaos that marred the final of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) on Sunday night.
The final was overshadowed by controversy after a late penalty decision in Morocco’s favour sparked angry protests from the Senegalese camp, leading to a brief stoppage as players appeared ready to walk off the pitch following instructions from the bench.
At the Centre of it all, Senegal head coach Pape Thiaw was seen calling his players off the field and eventually signaling to them to go down the tunnel into the dressing room on what appeared to be an attempt to boycott the match,
Tensions only eased after Sadio Mane stepped in, showing leadership by urging his teammates to return to the field so the match could continue.
Reacting to the incident, CAF said it condemns it totally and described the conduct of players and officials as unacceptable.
“The Confédération Africaine de Football (“CAF”) condemns the unacceptable behaviour from some players and officials during the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2025 Final between Morocco and Senegal in Rabat last night.
“CAF strongly condemns any inappropriate behaviour which occurs during matches, especially those targeting the refereeing team or match organizers,” CAF said in its statement on Monday.
CAF further disclosed that it is reviewing all footage and will refer the matter to competent bodies for appropriate action to be taken against those found guilty.
