For the 2019–2020 CAF Champions League, the final will be played as a single match on a pre-selected venue, marking a departure from previous editions that featured two-legged finals. This change comes in response to the controversial events during last May’s second leg between Espérance Sportive de Tunis and Wydad Athletic Club, which highlighted the challenges of the home-and-away format.
The CAF Executive Committee is set to meet on Thursday, November 21st, to determine both the host country and the date for the final. Four stadiums remain in contention to stage the single-leg showdown, with the Mohammed V Sports Complex in Casablanca among the shortlisted options. Other potential venues include Soccer City Stadium in Johannesburg, Cairo International Stadium, and Omar Bongo Stadium in Libreville. Initially, the stadium in Khartoum, Sudan, had been considered, but it was ultimately excluded from the final list.
The committee’s decision will be closely watched, as the venue will play a crucial role in logistics, fan attendance, and overall atmosphere for one of African club football’s most high-profile matches. CAF’s move to a single-leg final reflects a broader effort to ensure fairness, security, and smooth organization, avoiding the disputes and complications that arose during last season’s controversial conclusion.
The final venue and date will be officially revealed during the CAF Executive Committee meeting in Cairo, providing clarity for the clubs, supporters, and stakeholders across the continent. This announcement will also mark a significant step in modernizing the Champions League format and improving the overall experience for African club football.
