CAF Champions League: We must stay balanced against Stade Malien – Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso
Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso has highlighted the challenges his side will face in their CAF Champions League quarterfinal first leg against Stade Malien.
“We are going to play a team that’s very competitive. In away matches, they can be very narrow in defence, keeping stability in their defensive line,” Cardoso said.
The Portuguese tactician stressed the importance of maintaining defensive discipline while remaining potent in attack.
“For a team like us that scores goals, it’s important to keep clean sheets because they guarantee points. But we must not focus only on that – we must ensure that when we attack, we remain balanced.”
Sundowns, favourites for the tie, will aim to impose their attacking style without leaving themselves exposed at the back, with Cardoso urging his players to combine intensity, patience, and tactical awareness.
Sundowns have received a major boost with Zuko Mdunyelwa, Bathusi Aubaas, Keanu Cupido and Thapelo Morena all returning from injury, though Mothobi Mvala remains sidelined with a long-term issue.
The first leg promises a tactical battle as Sundowns look to secure an advantage before the return leg.
This will be the first-ever meeting between Mamelodi Sundowns and Stade Malien.
