USM Alger Targets Perfect Group Stage Finish Ahead of CAF Champions League Semi-Finals
With a place in the CAF Champions League semi-finals already secured, USM Alger is not easing up. The Algiers-based club remains fully focused as they prepare to face ES Sétif on Friday in the penultimate matchday of the group stage.
The Red and Black side is eager to bounce back from a disappointing domestic defeat to NA Hussein Dey in their Algerian Ligue 1 opener. Speaking to Le Buteur, midfielder Amir Beldjilali made it clear: the upcoming continental clash is about redemption and momentum.
“Victory is essential — first to redeem ourselves and forget the defeat to NAHD, and second to confirm that we are serious contenders for the final title. Anything less would bring doubt, which could be fatal for us,” Beldjilali said.
Despite having already sealed qualification, USMA wants to finish top of their group, which would ensure a second-leg home fixture in the semi-finals. To achieve that, they must continue their unbeaten run and secure all three points against defending champions ES Sétif.
“We’ve won our first four matches, so we have the right to aim for a perfect group stage,” Beldjilali added. “Hosting the return leg in Algiers is an advantage, and we want to earn it with positive results in these last two matches.”
While ES Sétif’s hopes of progressing are slim, USMA’s midfielder is wary of underestimating the reigning champions.
“It’s true Entente’s chances of qualification are limited, but that doesn’t mean they’ll come to Bologhine just to make up the numbers,” Beldjilali warned. “They’re still the title holders and will fight with everything they have. We must stay alert and focused.”
The showdown against ES Sétif will serve as a critical test for USM Alger’s ambitions, not just for progression, but for continental glory.
