Sundowns take command with 3-0 win over Stade Malien
Mamelodi Sundowns FC produced a commanding performance to defeat Stade Malien 3-0 in the first leg of their quarter-final meeting in the CAF Champions League.
The South African side secured the victory on Friday in Pretoria, building a significant advantage before the return leg, which will take place in Bamako next week.
Sundowns took control of the match in the first half, eventually breaking the deadlock through defender Khuliso Mudau. The right-back scored in the 34th minute to give the hosts a 1-0 lead heading into the interval.
The goal rewarded a period of steady pressure from the South African champions, who managed to impose their rhythm on the match and limit the opportunities available to their opponents.
After the break, Sundowns continued to push forward and increased their advantage early in the second half.
Forward Brayan León found the net in the 54th minute to double the lead and place the hosts firmly in control of the tie.
Stade Malien struggled to respond as the home side maintained their attacking momentum. The visitors attempted to contain the pressure but found it difficult to slow the pace of Sundowns’ forward play.
The decisive moment came later in the second half when Iqraam Rayners added a third goal in the 74th minute.
His strike further strengthened Sundowns’ position and effectively sealed a comfortable result for the home side.
The three-goal margin gives Sundowns a clear advantage heading into the second leg of the tie. The teams will meet again in Bamako, where Stade Malien will attempt to overturn the deficit and keep their campaign alive.
For Sundowns, the result places them in a strong position as the two-legged quarter-final moves towards its decisive stage.
The encounter forms part of the last-eight phase of the CAF Champions League, with both clubs aiming to secure a place in the semi-finals of Africa’s leading club competition.
After their convincing display in Pretoria, Sundowns now carry momentum and a significant lead into the return fixture.
