TP Mazembe’s Rainford Kalaba Eyes Redemption Against ES Sétif in CAF Champions League Semi-Final
By BBC Sport Africa Staff
TP Mazembe midfielder Rainford Kalaba has issued a rallying cry to his teammates ahead of their decisive second-leg clash against Algeria’s ES Sétif in the CAF Champions League semi-finals this Sunday in Lubumbashi.
The Congolese giants face a stern test after losing 2-1 in the first leg in Sétif last weekend. Now back on home soil, the Ravens must overturn the deficit if they are to secure a place in the continental final.
Kalaba, a seasoned Zambian international and a key figure in Mazembe’s midfield, acknowledged the disappointment of the first leg but remains optimistic about his team’s chances.
“We did our best last Saturday. Unfortunately, luck wasn’t on our side,” he told the club’s official website. “But we must work hard to qualify. This is the last match before the final – there’s no second chance. We have to give 100% to ensure victory.”
Reflecting on the previous encounter in Algeria, Kalaba believes there were plenty of positives despite the loss.
“It was a good game compared to our past away performances. We did many good things – the only thing missing was the result,” he noted.
The midfielder emphasised the importance of determination and unity heading into Sunday’s critical fixture.
“There can be no excuses. We must understand, deep inside, that we must win. I repeat – no excuses,” Kalaba concluded with conviction.
Mazembe, five-time winners of the CAF Champions League, will count on their home advantage in Lubumbashi, where they boast an intimidating record. With a passionate fanbase behind them and a place in the final at stake, all eyes will be on whether the Ravens can soar past Sétif and reclaim their position among Africa’s elite.
Kick-off is scheduled for Sunday, with the aggregate winner booking a ticket to the final of Africa’s most prestigious club competition.
